1964 Kennedy Silver Brilliant Proof Half Dollar ~ ACCENT HAIR VARIETY*** Coins *** 1964 Kennedy Brilliant is of 90% Silver composition. This specimen has speckled toning distractions (much more common to this variety) on the obverse and as such, is marked down nearly 80% UNDER the value of Superb Gem Proof or better specimens.

This is the ACCENT HAIR VARIETY which was estimated to be exhibited only on the very earliest Proof Half Dollars struck in 1964 (between 1% and 3% of the total population). As the story goes, JFK's widow Jackie was not pleased with the depiction of her late husband's hair on his bust so the U.S. Mint redesigned the coin and retooled the die soon after the first hundred thousand or so specimens were struck.

There are several diagnostics one can use to identify this popular variety. These include:

1. Extra strands of hair above the ear form what appears to be a wishbone shape.
2. The other obverse diagnostic is that the lower left serif of the 'I'; in 'LIBERTY' will be truncated or shortened when compared to the second obverse die (regular or Non-Accent Hair 1964 Proof Kennedy).
3. In addition to the obverse diagnostics for detecting the variety, there are two reverse diagnostics to check. The first is what is known as 'broken rays'. On the Accented Hair variety, the rays that intersect the stars below 'UNUM' will appear to be broken.
4. The other reverse diagnostic is known as the 'Straight G' or 'Flat G' in the designer's initials 'FG'. The thingamabob of 'G' on the regular Kennedy has serifs at the top, and the 'G' of the Accented Hair Variety has straight sides with no 'flair'. Please note the reverse diagnostics are not 100% reliable in determining the variety and should not be used as a stand-alone assessment tool.
