KenJo Gem Coins is always buying these. Set pictured, sold in mid-2003, and we been unable to locate anymore since then UNTIL NOW. Just arrived, and it is sweet! All six coins are no-doubt-it Type II mint marks with flat top serifs on the mint marks and bulbs on both ends of the 'S' on each and every coin's mint mark in this set. This new arrival has minimal distractions with very faint Proof haze in the fields on the Roosevelt Dime and on the reverse of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar. Very slight natural toning enhances the beauty of this set. We are restricted to eight total pictures on our website.

If you are a serious buyer, e-mail is for pictures of the remaining coins not pictured below along with close-ups of the mint marks (Nickel, Dime and Quarter) and we will more than happy to e-mail you.
Six coin set (includes an Susan B. Anthony Proof Dollar coin) where the coins will have DEEP CAMEO contrast. The mint introduced this new more compact style holder in 1979, which resulted in less air getting to the coins resulting in fewer sets with problems.
All coins in this set bear the much rarer Type II Elongated or Flat 'S' mint mark that has bulbules on the ends or tips of the 'S'. While 1981-S Proof Sets are occasionally found with one or a few of the coins having the Type II mint mark, it is EXTREMELY rare to find all 6 coins having the Type II mint mark. Generally speaking, this is probably the most misunderstood modern variety and one that we happen to specialize in. Do not be fooled into trying to buy one of these advertised on eBay (or anywhere else for that matter) unless you have utmost confidence that the seller understands the variety. I would estimate that at least 9 in 10 advertised 'Complete Type II Proof Sets of 1981-S', that we see on eBay and/or Yahoo are actually the more common Type I 1981-S Proof Set. The only eBay coin sellers we have seen that consistently identify the Type II variety correctly are dondi3, komka, covertbiz and ourselves. The fact of the matter is, MOST DEALERS and COLLECTORS DO NOT know the difference! The current dealer wholesale on the 1981-S Type II Proof Set sits at $255.00 to $285.00 and has increased over 250% since mid-2002. We suspect the reason is that the CDN Newsletter (the group that reports dealer-to-dealer weekly trading prices) is noticing how infrequently that legitimate 1981-S Type II Proof Sets actually change hands on the wholesale market. In all the years that we have been in the coin business, we have owned exactly seven of these and have never seen another at a show or in another dealer's stock. It is not for lack of effort in trying, as we have looked through thousands of 1981-S Proof Sets. Finally, we prefer to sell this to someone that does understand the variety since returns would be a touchy issue in that there is no easy way for us to insure that we would be getting our same very rare set back, in the event the ultimate buyer was not satisfied. If you are an interested buyer that does not know the difference or how to identify Type II 1981-S Mint Marks, we would be willing to use an escrow company of your choosing if you would be willing to absorb that cost. Or we could put a discreet mark on the case so that we would be sure a returned set is the same set we mailed out in the first place. |
