1934 Chester County PA 220 Yard Dash Sterling Silver Track Medal
Nice piece of antique sports memorabilia, a sterling silver medal attached by a ring to a red award ribbon which has a pin back so that it can be worn. Center front raised relief decor on medal is of a runner waiting at the starting line for the start of a Track & Field foot race event, with words above and below, "Chester County Championship". This must relate to a sports competition held in Chester County, PA (Penna., Penn.), which is also where the medal was purchased out of an elderly person's home (a relative had won the medal in his youth). We were advised that there was a Chester County Track & Field Championship Meet on May 12, 1934 at West Chester, PA High School and that it is likely that this medal came from participation in that meet. On the backside it states "2nd" (for second place), "1934, 220 YD D" (for the 220 yard dash race competition), "Sterling, Herff Jones".
The vintage medal and ribbon together stretched out are about 2 inches in length. The medal itself measures about 7/8 inch long x 5/8 inch wide. The ribbon portion is about 1 inch in length x 1 3/8 inch in width. The pin back on this piece is the old "open latch style" seen of this period. Several images have been provided; please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting.
Overall in very nice old condition, but it does show age and time wear. The medal itself has expected wear/dirt/tarnish (we have not attempted to clean it and are selling it "as is/as found"), especially visible around the edges of the piece and on the back side. It also has the general wear (some scratches, rubbed areas, etc.) one would expect of a piece kept in a drawer or jewelry box for years. The ribbon shows some dirt, especially on the front side in the middle nearing the top, with some also on the back side. While still whole, the ribbon is showing aged thread fraying right below the pin back on the back, and there may be some other thread spot aging beginning elsewhere on the ribbon.
Still a very nice find to add to a collection of sports memorabilia, particularly relating to Track and Field events, sporting events in Chester County or elsewhere in Pennsylvania, sports awards or medals in general, or a collection of general items relating to this region and it's history.
