Currier and Ives China, Baltimore MD near Whetstone Point, Delano Studios for Sun Glo Studios
Attractive china, ceramic or pottery plate (this piece is not porcelain as it is not translucent) with central transfer decor showing a port scene of Baltimore, Maryland near Whetstone Point, Maryland. This plate is fully marked on the underside as being a Currier and Ives Reproduction from their Americana Series. It was made by Delano Studios of Setauket, New York for Sun Glo Studios, with this also marked on the underside base.
Round white china plate with scalloped edge having a molded raised decor around the outer band with lines, scrolls, cross-hatching and dots. Lower interior center has multi-colored transfer graphic in greens, grays, blue and tan/beige. Scene shows what we believe to be the port in Baltimore with small buildings in the background, sailing ships in the harbor, and green grass with animals grazing, cows and steers, in the foreground.
Vintage plate measures about 10 inches in diameter and sits 3/4 inch in height. We've provided 5 images, including front, back, close-ups of the interior graphic, molded border edging and mark. Please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflections on the glossy surface. The lighting blands out the central graphic a bit...the colors are brighter, richer and bolder in person than they appear in the images.
Lovely overall condition with no chips, cracks or crazing but not mint. On close examination, there are a few tiny flakes on the outer edge, not chips but tiny flat worn spots on the glazed surface. There are some pin/pit dots, tiny black or transfer dots, and a few small scratches and a few small flat rubbed/worn spots on the interior graphic, nothing that jumps out at you but if you look closely at an angle in bright light you will see these scratches and spots. In the white pottery border around the central graphic (before the molded design outer band) on the right top side there is a small black slanted line about 1/4 inch in length. This is fully under the glazing so we don't know if this is a tiny hairline or just a stray line/transfer line on the pottery. On the backside there are some round spots where the glazing was imperfectly applied in manufacture and a bit of expected wear/darkening on the underside rim on which the piece sits. Nothing bad here at all and nothing that detracts from the great look on display, but if you look closely you'll see these imperfections and should know they are there.
A terrific piece to add to any Currier & Ives collection or a nice addition for any collection of items related to Maryland overall and Baltimore in specific. Would make a nice gift for a Baltimore history buff.
