Circa: 1950-1960 Manufacturer: Stanley Ballard, Burlington Vermont
Vermont Studio potter Stanley Ballard (1917-1960) graduated from Alfred University’s highly respected Ceramic Program in 1939, having studied there while these influential teachers were part of the faculty: Marion Fosdick, Charles Harder, Clarence Merritt, and C. Katherine Nelson.
This commercial 3 inch maple syrup jug was glazed in one of his solid color glazes which he used on some production pieces.
The piece is signed simply 'Hand Made in Vermont', but is shown as a Ballard product in the Summer 1953 Vermont Life 6 page article on Stanley Ballard. Excellent condition. What is a bit unusual about this particular example is that the words GRADE A are also stamped on the bottom of the piece in a black ink stamp.
A great combo of Vermont product and Vermont Studio Art pottery from the Mid Century period. |
