Circa: 1950-1970
Manufacturer: Mats Jonasson Målerås

Mats Jonasson Målerås is Sweden’s largest privately owned glassworks. Today it primarily produces art glass and decorative glass, which mainly is cut, painted and engraved. However, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Jonasson's animal sculptures gained visibility, and designer/engraver Mats Jonasson made a name for himself on a wide front. This is said to be one of the reasons that Kosta Boda bought Målerås Glassworks in 1977.

When the purchase was completed, however, Mats Jonasson stipulated that glass he designed could be made only at Målerås. Mats was born and raised in Målerås, and that is where he learned to be an engraver.

The first figural is of a bird. It stands 3 inches tall. As you can tell from the photos, it is made of dichroic glass. According to Wikipedia, Dichroic glass is glass containing multiple micro-layers of metals or oxides which give the glass dichroic optical properties. The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it has a particular transmitted color and a completely different reflected color, as certain wavelengths of light either pass through or are reflected. This causes an array of color to be displayed. The colors shift depending on the angle of view. Dichroic glass is an example of thin-film optics. The bird is signed on the bottom with an acid stamped mark.

The elephant stands 4 inches tall to the tip of its trunk. It is signed in an etched signature, hard to read but it says Maleras.

I love the fact that in the daylight or under flourescent lighting the glass is blue, but under normal incandescent lights the glass is a lovely shade of purple.

Add both pieces to your Swedish glass or Mid-century glass collection today. I bought them both very reasonably, thus the reasonable price. Price if for the pair.

Both are in excellent condition and ready for home or collection today.
