Historical background: The 25th anniversary of Her Most Excellent Majesty Elizabeth the Second's succession to the throne was celebrated in 1977. Born in London in 1926. Her Maesty was crowned in Westminster Abbey (where she had married Philip Mountbatten RN in 1947) on June 2, 1953, following the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6 in the previous year.
The monarchy is the United Kikngdom's oldest secular institution; its continuity has been broken only once (1649-1660) and the hereditary principle upon which it was founded survives. The Queen personifies the State - being, in law, head of the executive, an integral part of the legislature and head of the judiciary; she is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Crown and temporal governor of the established Church of England.
The heir to the throne is the Prince of Wales, the eldest of the four children of HM The Queen and HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh KG.
